The 22nd of April is known as International Mother Earth Day and is celebrated worldwide with the aim of raising awareness about relevant climate issues as well as highlighting the importance of environmental conservation. The topic of climate change and environmental ethics is particularly relevant today as many living organisms on Earth are facing several ecological and climatic issues as a result of mankind’s tendency to exploit natural resources. Thus, it is important that everyone understands and participates in this cause which is why we are glad to announce that…
Katedralskolan is hosting a celebration of their own this coming Earth Day, and it demands everyone’s participation! Students will have two workshops/lectures to attend during the course of the day on Tuesday, April 22, 2025; which will be on the theme of Earth and the environment.
All students should have received a list of what lectures they have been allocated to according to their submitted preferences. If you have not done so already, please check your ManageBac inbox to know where you are supposed to go!
The following workshops will be available for IBDP students:
Menstruation Matters! by Sara Gabrielsson
(12.30-13.30 and 13.45-14.45 in Gradängsalen)
Environmental Ethics by Jason Markley
”It should be pretty simple, right? We all need nature in one way or another so you would think that we would have come to a consensus by now about environmental ethics. Unfortunately, we have not. Why? It turns out that there are more questions, and even more possible answers to said questions, than we might normally think. Today we will learn about some of the questions and have a chance to discuss some possible answers.”
(12.30-13.30 in Ka11)
Faith and The Environment by Nomi Cohen
What role can religion and faith play for the climate and the environment? Together we watch 1-2 short documentaries on the subject and talk about the relationship between religion and the future of the earth.
(13.45-14.45 in Ka11)
The Nature of Poetry - A Creative Workshop by Vivi and Louise
The concept of nature is, and has always been, a source of inspiration in literature. In recent years, a new way of approaching literature has emerged: ecocriticism, which aims at exploring nature in literature without putting human beings in the centre but rather presenting them as part of nature. In our creative workshop, we would like to explore ecocriticism with you by first reading and then writing poetry. We hope that through your poems, we might all rediscover our interconnectedness with Mother Earth.
(12.30-13.30 in Ka12)
In addition to the lectures, there will be several activities taking place around the school building, including visits from political youth organizations and NGOs.
Katedralskolan will also be hosting a “Clothing Swap” this Earth Day where students will have the opportunity to update their wardrobe by visiting Ka13! If you are planning to do some spring cleaning in your closet and wish to contribute to the clothing swap, you can hand in clothes in Ka13 on the morning of April 22. The "swap room" will be open until 13.00 for students and staff. Clothes that are left without a new home at the end of the day will be donated to charity.
Another thing to keep a lookout for is the long-awaited premiere of the Earth Day 2025 magazine brought to you by The Demoskratos, a CAS project run by Bára Beránova, Naomi Blair, Edward Johnson and Krisha Nathan. The magazine will be on display in the library, available for students to read and learn about environmental issues in regards to politics, ecology and engineering!
During the entire week the school cafeteria will serve innovative and climate friendly food to students and staff alike.
With all the promising special lectures and other activities on the way, we hope that all of us students have something new to learn and take away with us by the end of this day!
